Child Care Tuition Scholarship Program

Purpose

• Keep low-income parents in the work force or training for work
• Decrease the number of working poor parents who must quit jobs and go on welfare because they can’t afford the cost of childcare
• Provide quality early education opportunities for young children who otherwise would not be able to afford it

Who provides funding for the scholarships? Funding for this program at the Douglas County Child Development Association is provided by United Way of Douglas County.

Who provides the childcare? Eight non-profit, federally certified full-day centers in Lawrence including:

How do parents get a scholarship? Parents who are working or who are in training or educational programs and who are income eligible, but who are not eligible for Kansas SRS funding, should call any of the participating centers.  The center will be able to determine whether the parent is eligible and if there are openings for the child(ren) at this time.

How much of the childcare bill does the scholarship pay? Scholarships are paid on a sliding scale according to the parents’ income.  They pay between 20% and 100% of the childcare fee.  Parents who have partial scholarships are billed by the center for the remainder of their bill.

What are the income eligibility guidelines? Child must be a United States citizen; Families are eligible to apply if they make no more than the following amounts monthly:

• 2 member family - $3,500
• 3 member family - $4,400
• 4 member family -$5,300
• 5 member family - $6,200
• 6 member family - $7,100
• 7 member family - $8,000
• 8 member family - $8,900
• 9 member family - $9,800
• 10 member family - $10,700
